Tidy Town group in line for award

Members of Boyle Tidy Town committee will head to Westport on Tuesday next with hopes of being recognised with an award at this year’s North West and West Regional Tidy Towns Awards ceremony. The event takes place in Knockranny House Hotel at 7.30pm. Last year, Boyle were runners up in the ‘Town Centre First Awards’. With such hard work put in this year by so many volunteers, an award would be a fitting tribute to the efforts of so many.
Also from a Tidy Town perspective, the number of derelict buildings around town are being gradually reduced, and hopefully by Christmas, a number of others will have received an upgrade or have plans announced for repurposing.

Cannonball route not stopping in Roscommon this year

The annual Cannonball Run will not come through Roscommon this year but it will be relatively close to us – stopping off for lunch in Lough Rynn Castle on Sunday September 8th at approximately 13.15. The event commences at Johnstown House just off the M4 on Friday 6th and initially makes it’s way to Wexford. Day 2 sees the super cars head up to Wicklow and across to Galway while Day 3 on Sunday goes from Galway to Athlone and onto Lough Rynn, finishing up in Trim. The exact route to Lough Rynn from Athlone is not yet known but if previous years are anything to go by, it could change at the last minute!

News snippets from around Boyle

Well done to Conan and Aine Cosgrove who are leading by example with the regeneration of their ancestral home on St. Patrick Street. This week, what was a then modern 70’s/80’s sign, has been removed from the front of the building and the traditional hand painted ‘D. Cosgrove’ sign unearthed which is currently being brought back to life. If we had more of this type of regeneration in Boyle it would add to the historic feel of the town………It has been a very sad week locally with a number of deaths in and around Boyle. At this time, we are thinking of all who have passed away and those left to mourn………….Ciorcal Comhrá, the informal Irish conversation group will recommence next Tuesday, 10th September at 18.30 in Boyle Library. All are welcome……….There are a large number of events planned in Boyle, and indeed county wide, on the weekend of the 20th for ‘Roscommon Bound’ and ‘Global Rossie Day’. More details next week on Boyletoday.com……..It is understood efforts are underway to identify the owners of a number of cars that are abandoned on the streets and car parks of the town – some for a number of months now. With public realm work in the final stages of completion, it is imperative that these cars are removed to free up parking spaces………There was shock in Boyle this week at the sudden passing of Nollaig Whyte. Nollaig was a former Town Regeneration Officer for Roscommon Co Co and worked closely with Boyle Town Team on the regeneration of the town and a number of local projects………Culture Friday today at 1.30pm in Una Bhan Craft Shop features lunch time tunes with well known, musician and song writer John Costello………The former St. Mary’s College in Boyle was named in the recently published ‘Report of the Scoping Inquiry into Historical Sexual Abuse in Day and Boarding Schools Run by Religious Orders’, as a school where one person alleged they experienced abuse.

And finally….!

Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart.
He was stiff-legged and walking slowly.
One student said to his friend: “I’m sure that poor old man has Peltry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that.”
The other student says: “No, I don’t think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart, just as we learned in class.”
Since they couldn’t agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him: “We’re medical students and couldn’t help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn’t agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?”
The old man said: “I certainly will tell you, but first you tell me what you two fine medical students think.”
The first student said, “I think it’s Peltry Syndrome.”
The old man said, “You thought – but you are wrong.”
The other student said, “I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome.”
The old man said, “You thought – but you are wrong.”
So they asked him, “Well, old timer, what do you have?”
The old man said, ” Well, I thought it was wind – but I was wrong, too!”
