Support sought for Boyle native in Seanad bid

A Boyle native is seeking election to Seanad Eireann and his former school teacher and friend Tony Conboy is asking those who can vote for Hilary Beirne to please help elect a Boyle man to Seanad Eireann.

Speaking to Boyletoday.com, Tony said: “I am aware of the lack of political representation in the town of Boyle and its hinterland. One last chance is that of electing a person to the Senate. Boyle now has a person contesting a seat to the Senate. His name is Hillary Beirne, son of former Boyle VET. Johnny Beirne origionally from Rathdiveen”.

“Hilary is contesting the election in the N.U.I. constituency where there are three seats at play. This comprises graduates from the National University of Ireland which is made up of U.C.G. / U. C. D. / U. C.C. and Maynooth University”.

“After secondary school in St. Mary’s College in Boyle, Hillary initially graduated from U. C. G. / U. C.D. in agriculture and later with a masters degree in environmental science. He also attended what is now called The Atlantic Technology University formerly titled ‘Mountbellew Agricultural College’. Later in New York he qualified as a teacher there for 30 years”.

“He emigrated to the U. S. in 1988 and after teacher qualification he quickly immersed himself in the issues of the emigree Irish in New York. His major contribution was his role in the organisation of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Many Roscommon visitors, including the Castlerea Band, were welcomed to the Big Apple by Hillary in both an official and personal way there. Some short years ago he was nominated to the prestigious Washington based Ad Hoc Committee to Protect the Good Friday Agreement. These are just a couple of Irish favoured organisations in which he is engaged”.

“He has many family connections in Boyle and Carrick on Shannon and officially opened ‘Boyle Arts Festival’ in 2022. Hillary has been a regular visitor to his hometown and a success would enhance that greatly”.

“In my opinion, this would be a very positive contribution to Boyle’s political landscape”.

“So as a former teacher and longtime friend I would be delighted to see Hillary succeed in his effort to gain a seat in the Seanad”, concluded Tony.

Graduate Registration. “In canvassing known graduates to support Hillary I have come across quite a few who have not been REGISTERED and so had no vote. Going forward voting rights for the six university seats in Seanad Eireann will be extended to graduates of all third level institutions in the State. The closing date for registration is 23rd January 2025”
