Sgt Balfe’s family say thank you
The following was received from Boyletoday.com viewer Christine Balfe/Lowe:
Good morning,
I would like to thank Boyletoday.com for the coverage allowed recently of the Battle of Boyle where my uncle Sgt Frank Balfe was killed in 1922.
Grateful thanks also to Paul Malpas for his research to enable his family to feel satisfied, and find closure.
Sgt Balfe was honourably treated by the local population, given a requiem Mass and taken to his home town of Athlone.
Ironically Frank was born on the Roscommon side of Athlone in 1896 and died in Roscommon 1922.
Pictured is the tribute wreath we placed on our uncles grave in the hope that the sacrifices of those killed in the Civil war will not be forgotten.
Regards,
Christine Balfe /Low
