Scam led to cash withdrawal in Boyle

Gardaí are warning shoppers of a scam that has seen money withdrawn from a Sligo woman’s bank account via an ATM in Boyle.

The woman was in her car in the car park of a Sligo store on Thursday November 20th when she was approached by a “very respectable, well dressed man in his fifties who spoke good English but was not English”.

The man knocked on the window of the car and asked the woman for directions to Castlerea.

He produced a map and laid it out on the bonnet of an adjoining car.

When the woman got out to assist the man, an accomplish opened the passenger door and stole her credit card from her handbag which was on the floor of the car.

Two hours later almost €3000 had been withdrawn from her account in three locations – Boyle, Carrick and Longford.

The lady believes that the gang had watched her use her card in the store and saw her PIN number.

The man who distracted the lady is described as clean shaven, average height with fair hair who even went as far as kissing the ladies hand after she gave him directions.
