Boyle on RTE1 on Thursday
The first programme in the new series of Tracks and Trails will be transmitted on RTE 1 on Thursday March 5th 2015 at 7.00pm.
Building on the success of the previous four series, the fifth series will again feature spectacular walks and cycles in stunning locations all over the island of Ireland.
The first programme begins as writer and storyteller Michael Harding follows the Miner’s Way and Historical Trail from the town of Boyle, Roscommon, to his home in Arigna. Along with his guide, Philip James, he visits Boyle Abbey – a 12th-century monastery, which was later converted into a military garrison in the 17th century. The pair’s next point of interest is Rockingham House, followed by Moylurg Tower – a focal point of the Lough Key Forest and Activity Park. The final stretch of their journey is to the Arigna Mining Experience, where they meet former miner Peter McNiff.
Definitely one not to be missed by all outdoor enthusiasts.
The programme was funded by Roscommon County Council and Coillte. It is hoped that the series will encourage more Irish people to enjoy some of the many walking and cycling trails that have been developed in Ireland in recent years. Further information on tourism in Roscommon see www.roscommon.ie.
