An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission to the N5 Scramogue to Ballaghaderreen road scheme.
The project will involve the construction of 35km of new carriageway along with the realignment of nearly 15km of existing roads.
The news has been welcomed by local Dail Deputies and Senators including senator Frank Feighan who said:
“I have lobbied hard for many years on the need to upgrade this road and I am delighted this major scheme has now been granted planning approval.
“This is a red letter for this significant project, which involves constructing almost 35 kilometres of new carriageway along with the realignment of nearly 15 kilometres of existing roads.
“For anyone who is familiar with this dangerous stretch of road, it’s very evident from a safety perspective how urgent this road project is for residents and motorists alike.
“The Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue scheme has been in the pipeline for many years and hundreds of thousands of euro have already been spent on the pre-construction stages of the project.
“I am now delighted that the scheme has got planning approval to ensure this project can now get substantially off the ground” concluded Senator Feighan.
