Last day of business at Castlerea PO
Today Thursday 1st December will be the last day of business for Castlerea Post Office.
Following a tender process, postal services will be moved to Dermot Lyon’s Mace Supermarket in the Square from Friday.
The landmark Post Office building on Main Street was formerly the site of both a sorting office and a telephone exchange and has been in operation since 1911.
It’s proposed closure has resulted in divided comment in the town.
It’s understood some of the current Post Office staff will move to the new facility, while others are retiring.
Castlerea will join 1,100 post offices in Ireland that are run by contract postmasters with just 51 company run and staffed.
Meanwhile in Ballaghaderreen the application process for the role of retail partner to An Post in the town, closed on Friday, November 4th.
