‘Hidden Aquatic Treasures of Boyle Rivers and Loughs’
Roscommon Environmental Network are pleased to be hosting a talk on the Boyle River and Waterways as part of the Boyle Arts Festival
“Hidden Aquatic Treasures of the Boyle Area’s Rivers and Loughs” will be presented by Professor Ken Whelan on Thursday 25th July 2024 at 6pm in King House, Boyle with admission €5.
This illustrated talk is presented by Professor Ken Whelan who has over 40 years’ experience in the fields of fisheries science, recreational fisheries, climate change impacts, stock dynamics of Atlantic salmon and sea trout, and aquaculture. He is a regular contributor on national radio on the topic of our lakes and rivers.
Lying at the base of the Curlew Mountains, Boyle hosts a myriad of freshwater wetlands, loughs and rivers. In his presentation Ken Whelan will bring to life the unique populations of fish and invertebrates that abound in these waters – from the giant pike of loughs Key and Gara to the magical and abundant populations of mayflies (Ephemera danica), which inhabit Loughs Arrow and Cavetown. Just a few kilometres from the centre of Boyle lies the River Unshin – one of the untouched gems of Irish rivers, replete with its lush water meadows, beloved of Éamon de Buitléar, and large, fast growing, limestone brown trout.
