Explosive device found in Leitrim
Carrick on Shannon Gardaí assisted by the Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a viable improvised explosive device (IED) in between Drumshanbo and Leitrim village Thursday evening.
The Defence Forces deployed the team in response to a request from the gardaí after a suspect device was found on a grass verge.
A cordon and road closures were put in place at around 5.35pm.
The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and was taken away to a military location for further testing
The army described the device as a “crude igniferous device”.
All component parts and items will be handed over to the gardaí as evidence to assist them with their investigations, said the Defence Forces.
The scene was declared safe at 6.35 pm.
