Boyle student called up to Connacht U17 rugby squad
A Boyle student has been named on the Connacht U-17 rugby squad.
Jayden Bosomtwe has been playing rugby with Carrick-On-Shannon RFC since Under-10 level and has moved up the ranks each year.
The Abbey College student is also part of the school’s rugby team and won the Junior Player of the year with the ACC.
The Connacht call-up with see Jayden along with fellow Carrick RFC players Niall Stenson, (Carrick on Shannon Community School), Peter Moran, (Mohill Community College) and Bobby Hanrahan, (Sligo Grammar) travel to the ATU Campus in Galway for two full days per week over the summer months followed by a series of interprovincial and travelling team tour games.
Carrick-on-Shannon RFC is a vibrant expanding club across South Leitrim/ North Roscommon. They have slowly but surely developed a young competitive and well organised Men’s Senior team and vibrant Minis/Youth section with over 200 young players involved playing in underage leagues and blitzes. They now have over 30 volunteer coaches involved in their training and coaching, and who in turn, are helping grow the club and add further chapters to Carrick on Shannon RFC’s relatively short history.
In recent years some of their young players are getting provincial, even international recognition with Gerard Murtagh being capped at U19 level versus Italy and Diarmuid O’Connell being selected for Connacht U18 this season and on an Irish development pathway program.
They also seen team success in recent years, with the U14’s winning the D2 league and reaching the Connacht Cup Final in 2022 and theU15’s winning the Connacht plate in 2022 followed by the same group winning the U16 Connacht D2 league in 2023.
The U16 team had 6 boys selected for Connacht regional development squad with and even split between Roscommon and Leitrim. This group has boys from 13 GAA clubs from both counties.
