Boyle golf club news
INTERCLUB – Well done to our men’s team in the Cecil Ewing Tournament who prevailed in an incredibly tight finish against Castle Dargan Golf Club. Boyle received a walk over for one of the games in Boyle, and Pat Conroy and Michael McHale had a very comfortable win in the other home game. Boyle lost in the 2 games in Castle Dargan which thus necessitated a “sudden death” play off as both teams had each won 2 games. The playoff had to take place on Castle Dargan’s course, which meant that Noel McKenna and Owen Garvin had the unenviable task of playing in this sudden death play off, immediately after losing their own game on the same course. The lads rallied brilliantly and halved 3 holes in succession before finally winning the 4th playoff hole, beating their opponents in their home course and securing a win against the odds. Hearty congrats to the team and joint captains Vincent Egan and Mark Whelan.
Our next interclub action involves our Jack O’Sullivan Tournament team, captained by Lochlann Conboy who are also playing Castle Dargan. This match takes place tomorrow at 4.30.
In what is proving to be a remarkably busy period of interclub golf, we also have a team playing in the Connacht Shield next Sunday the 11th. This team is captained by Niall Kearney and Cillian Doyle.
Best of luck to all the above teams.
RESULTS – Owen O’Donohoe had a very good win in the PGA Tankard competition with his 41 points being 2 clear of Shane O’Dowds 39. Martin Wynne won the gross and Charlie O’Donnell came 3rd. Owen is having a solid year and is now at number 4 on the Golfer of the Year order of merit, leaving him 3 places ahead of brother Niall by the end of last weekend. However Niall won the Thursday 12 hole competition later in the week which has likely tightened the gap between the 2 considerably. Lochlann Conboy is still top dog on this table, with Lee McKillen and Michael Simon taking the next 2 spots.
