Concern raised at lack of maintenance of Cycle Way
There is growing concern locally at the lack of maintenance of the Lough Key to Boyle Cycle Way.
A number of people have been in contact with Boyletoday.com over the last few days in relation to the dangerous state of the path with fallen leaves, especially between the first and second gates of Rockingham.
Others have previously contacted Boyletoday.com to highlight the lack of maintenance which has seen parts of the cycle way, especially south of the Woodenbridge, become so overgrown that it is only possible for cyclists or pedestrians to walk in single file.
These concern have once again been raised by Boyletoday.com with our elected representatives.
Earlier this year Councillor Leah Cull brought the need for maintenance of the Cycle Way before Roscommon County Council.
In reply, the Local Authority informed Councillor Cull that “Where cycle tracks or cycle ways are part of the public road network, they fall under the LA’s responsibility. For example, the Boyle MD office is responsible for the street cleaning of the cycleway between the two arches and agrees to carry out any necessary cleaning or maintenance works on this section of the cycleway”.
“However, it should be noted that the Department has not provided any specific funding for the ongoing general maintenance of cycleways, cycle tracks or greenways and this will need to be addressed as additional cycling infrastructure is provided”.
“In relation to the cycling facilities within the grounds of Lough Key Forest Park, an MOU and Licence Agreement, which covers the development and maintenance of Lough Key Forest Park Cycle Corridor, was executed on the 02/20/2019 and runs for a ten year period. Roscommon County Council is committed to the maintenance of the trail and associated infrastructure for the above mentioned agreement period”.
