2020 Division 1 Championship Final
Pride of place this week must go to our James Lannon Motors/ Hankook Tyres sponsored U16 team, who, after much delay, were crowned 2020 U16 Division 1 Champions following a seven-point victory over Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys in Kilbride on Saturday evening.
After a nervy opening, in which Boyle fell two points behind, the players showed fight and determination way beyond their years to capture the elusive cup.
The instrumental Conor Kelly registered Boyle’s first score at eleven minutes after he evaded several challenges.
Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys looked in for a certain goal, however, Boyle goalkeeper Seán Garavan produced a magnificent save.
This was the wake-up call Boyle needed. Gavin O’Connor gathered a Shay Noone pass and found Conor Kelly. Kelly spotted Eden Kerins and the centre-half back split the uprights with a score with the outside of his right boot.
Gavin O’Connor played a quick one-two with Luke McGrath on twenty-three minutes before finding David Duggan with a pass along the ground. Duggan smartly kept the ball low and hard beyond the despairing dive of the Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys goalkeeper.
O’Connor and Niall O’Donnell were accurate from placed balls while Conor Kelly registered his second and third of the contest right before half time to leave five points between the sides at the interval.
Niall O’Donnell raised a white flag once more ten minutes into the second half after a confident free.
O’Donnell and O’Connor exchanged frees as Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys looked to claw back the deficit.
Joseph Coyle and Mark Dwyer stifled an Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys attack after forty-two minutes. Coyle fisted to captain Daniel Casey, who played a delightful pass into the path of Cathal McKeon, who’s pace and strength were too much for his opponents, and added his name to the scoresheet.
Seán Garavan was called into action again on fifty minutes, once again, the Boyle netminder was equal to it showing brilliant reactions.
David Duggan added a point to his tally before wing-backs Oran Henry and Mark Halligan combined with Henry splitting the uprights with a deft finish.
Eire Óg/ Michael Glaveys registered a mere consolation goal in injury time before Gavin O’Connor left the margin at seven at the full-time whistle, which was greeted to loud, rapturous cheers from the sizeable Boyle support.
