The Boyle’d Pot 5/7/19
Drumshanbo leading by example
Fair play to our neighbours over in Drumshanbo who have been the recipients of favourable publicity in recent weeks as a result of a number of tourism related events and openings. Firstly the opening of phase three of the Shannon Blueway last Friday saw Minister Michael Ring visit the town where he spoke of the resurgence of towns like Drumshanbo. He then went on to officially open Jinny’s tea rooms – a business that has piggy backed on the Blueway. Visitors to An Tostal festival in the Leitrim town over the weekend were also in praise of the ‘Stylish Silage’ initiative where bales of silage are painted and decorated and placed strategically all around the town. And the water park on Lough Allen beside the hotel has also come in for praise.
Roll on 2020/21 and Boyle will hopefully be receiving the same recognition as Drumshanbo, with now the time for businesses to plan for our cycle path, Royal development, Drumanilra Farm Kitchen expansion, Model Railway in the Courthouse and hopefully the sports development on the Termon Lands along with the other major projects that will be announced later in the year.
Unfair criticism of our local authority
‘Council Bashing’ has once again raised its head in local media (not Boyletoday.com) in the past week or two. The recently launched county tourism website, that has met with such great acclaim by so many, has been the subject of unfair and coordinated criticism both online and in print. In addition, the running of King House has also been questioned with a border line libellous statement published online on how the facility should be operated.
The fact remains that Roscommon County Council in its current form has and is doing more for Boyle than ever before. If it were not for the Council, the Royal Hotel would probably be demolished now. We would have no cycle path to look forward to, no riverside walk, or any of the circa €5m investment that is coming our way. The council need praise not criticism. In addition, the launch of visitroscommon.ie is a brilliant effort by the Tourism Department of the Council to make Roscommon, and in particular Boyle, a top tourist destination. There may be one or two minor errors on the new website but that is to be expected post launch with a project of its size. (Boyletoday.com proudly provides a link to the new site from the ‘Tourism’ section of the navigation bar on Boyletoday.com homepage).
The answer to the “critics” of our local authority is for the civic bodies in Boyle, along with the Council, to continue what they are presently doing and ignore the ramblings of the one or two who continue to try and destabilize the great work that is presently underway in this town and county.
Warning over ‘Revenue’ scam
A number of people around the Boyle area have reported receiving an unsolicited text message allegedly from ‘REVENUE’ including a message that informs the recipient that a refund is available and is allegedly sent by the ‘ROS.Team’. Gardai who are investigating the scam say that “when the injured party clicks the Hyperlink embedded in the text message they are brought to what appears to be a legitimate ROS (Revenue Online) website and there are numerous text boxes seeking the injured parties’ details including Name, DOB and Bank Details”. They warn that the fraudulent website is well made with all associated colours, images and text as used in the legitimate ROS website. An Garda Síochána would advise that you DO NOT click the hyperlink and delete this message from your phone.
All good news at Drumanilra Farm Kitchen
The progressive Liam and Justina Gavin have recently received planning permission for their major redevelopment at Drumanilra Farm Kitchen in Boyle. When constructed this development will be a catalyst for attracting more tourists to our town and will fit in nicely with all other developments that are in train. Along with the opening of the Draft House in Strandhill, the Gavins’s are also moving ahead with plans for another farm shop and kitchen in Carrick on Shannon with further information/revised plans lodged recently with Leitrim Co Co. Hats off the Liam and Justina who have seen the business opportunities that exist in this area and have gone and ‘put their money where their mouth is’. They deserve the great support they are already receiving.
And finally….!
A chemist walks into his shop to find a man leaning against the wall.
“What’s wrong with him”, the chemist asks.
” He came in for cough syrup, but I couldn’t find any so I sold him some laxatives”, said the shop assistant.
“You can’t treat a cough with laxatives”, quipped the chemist.
“Of course you can said the assistant” – “look at him -he’s now too scared to cough!”.
