The realigned N61 road south of Boyle was officially opened on Tuesday morning November 13th at 11.30am by Tony Ward Cathoirleach Roscommon County Council.
Costing in excess of €5m, the work was completed on time and within budget.
The event was attended by local councillors, Senators Frank Feighan and Maura Hopkins, Majella Hunt Roscommon Co Co who deputised for County Manager Eugene Cummins, local authority personnel, Clare Civil engineering personnel and local people who live along the route.
Speakers included Senator Feighan, Majella Hunt, Tony Ward and Andrew Whelan on behalf of the contractors.
Mr Whelan said they were delighted to have completed the project on time and within budget.
He said 90% of the materials used were purchased within an 18 mile radius of the site including Roadstone in Boyle and Castlemine in Roscommon.
Many local contractors were used in the construction including Colin Flanagan’s Future View Developments Ltd who were responsible for the water mains installation, cycle paths and signage.
The N61 Ratallen and Treanagry Road Improvement project involved the realignment and widening of approximately 2.7km of National Secondary road to Type 2 Single Carriageway standard (S2).
It comprised approximately 1.2km in the townlands of Ratallen & Runnaboll and approximately 1.5km in the townlands of Cloonshaghan, Treanagry & Knockroe (ED Rushfield).
The sections are approximately 2km apart and are located approximately 8km to 10km south of Boyle town.
