The long awaited upgrade to a section of the N61 Boyle to Roscommon road will culminate this morning with the opening of the stretch from Boyle to south of the Four Provinces licensed premises.
These safety improvement works has seen the realignment of approximately 1.1 km of road on two sections of the N61 at Treanagry and Rathallen.
Motorists have mainly been using the Boyle, Frenchpark to Tulsk and Boyle, Crogan to Elphin as alternative routes for the last number of months while works was underway.
Senator Frank Feighan has welcomed the opening of the road:
“I am delighted that the major road safety works being carried out on this part of the N61 has finished. The road will now open on today following a formal Roscommon County Council ceremony to mark the completion of the project. I am very pleased that the reopening of the road will bring to an end the diversion currently in place and of course that will mean very good news for many affected motorists.
“I fully acknowledge that many motorists have been inconvenienced as a result of these works but significantly, this scheme will remove two very dangerous bends along this route, which have been in existence since the foundation of the State.
“In the last Government, I was very pleased to have secured the €7m in funding required to carry out these major realignment works.
“And I will continue to seek and secure more funding to further improve more sections of this very busy national secondary road.” the Boyle based Senator said.
