Welcomed parking restrictions on upper Elphin Street/Station Road
The new “one hour only” parking road signs on Station Road/upper Elphin Street are most welcome, particularly by the residents and businesses in that area. The spaces were being used by those who did not want to fork out the €3 parking charge at the train station and on occasion have been occupied from 7.15am until the last train arrived in Boyle at 9.30pm. But while the signs are welcome, it does not take from the fact that we have to pay to park at Boyle train station. Why is this the case when rail users in Carrick on Shannon can park for free? There does not seem to be any difference in Boyle and Carrick stations and how they operate, so why is there a charge to park in one and not in the other?
Remembering the Battle of the Curlew Pass
Last Monday marked the 417th anniversary of the Battle of the Curlews and with the exception of a story here on Boyletoday.com, the anniversary would have passed without notice. The Battle of the Curlews was a major conflict in the Nine Years War and rated one of the heaviest blows suffered at the time by the English in Ireland. The Battle is part of the heritage of Boyle and as such should receive due recognition. It should, at the very least, be marked with a ceremony every year on the spot where 232 men lost their lives in a two hour period. The history of the Battle is well documented in the Annals of Lough Key, the Annals of the Four Masters and in writings by the late Colonel Cyril Mattimoe, a native of Boyle.
A new form of low for copper pipe thieves
Some from Boyle were among those who has cardiac procedures cancelled at Sligo University Hospital on Wednesday last after thieves stole a vital external lead, containing a copper element, from the mobile cardiac catherisation laboratory unit parked beside The Mall entrance to the hospital. The visiting mobile unit comes one day per week as plans progress to provide a permanent cath. lab at the hospital. All patients who turned up in Sligo on Wednesday were sent home. News of the Sligo theft comes a week after it is alleged €1000 worth of lead and copper was taken from vacant houses at Silverore in Boyle.
Renting accommodation to Boyle students
With the Leaving cert results now digested, the wait commences for CAO first round offers on Monday and the transition from home to third level. Certainly when it comes to college in Dublin, accommodation will prove an obstacle for many. Previously this blog suggested that it would be a good idea if Boyle native landlords gave preference to Boyle students when it comes to renting out houses and apartments. The benefits include knowing the students and their parents so chances are the accommodation would be maintained better than renting it to some stranger. Boyle will feature once again on TV
We have said it here before and will say it once again, Boyle must be one of the most televised towns in Ireland and the highest recipient of national publicity of any similar size town in the country. Last Friday it was the turn of a TV crew to head out on the lake, courtesy of Lough Key Boats, to film a segment on the invasive Zebra Mussel. While not the most noteworthy reason to get on a national screen, the negativity of the infamous mussel will be far outweighed by the beauty of Lough Key once the documentary is aired in November.
Boyle Summer Show on Sunday
This Sunday the Boyle Summer Show takes place at it’s new home in the GAA training grounds in The Warren. With horse jumping, dog show, junk couture and various show classes, we all hope the weather is more favourable to the committee than it was for the 2015 Show. A lot of effort has gone into organising the show, an event that was synonymous with the end of summer in Boyle for many years. Hail, rain or shine make sure to drop out to The Warren on Sunday and support your local Summer Show.

A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about having a son.
They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted.
The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy.
The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son.
He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen.
He told his wife: ‘There’s no way I can be the father of this baby.
Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered!
Have you been fooling around behind my back?’
The wife smiled sweetly and replied:
‘Not this time!’
