Now that the Leaving Cert results are old news for most, thoughts move to college places and the first round CAO offers which will become available this Monday morning. But the worry for parents and students doesn’t stop there. College accommodation will be the next problem, especially for those who will travel to Dublin to further their education. Last year, this website had many parents asking us to request landlords from Boyle and the general area who own properties in Dublin or Galway to consider taking in local students. It is a great idea and a really is a win win for all. For the landlord, they are taking in young people from their own town so if anything goes wrong, they will probably know their tenants parents and will not get stuck for rent or damage. For the student, they will have accommodation and hopefully respect the property as they will know the landlord. Lough Key impresses Rose’s of Tralee
The day stayed dry and mild for the visit of the Rose of Tralee contestants to Lough Key Forest Park on Wednesday last. It was a great publicity opportunity for our Park with a camera man from the Rose festival accompanying the girls as they participated in the various activities. Hopefully, their visit will form part of the broadcast from Tralee next week and if so, Boyle and it’s Park will definitely be the winner. As soon as the Rose’s got out of the bus many looked towards the lake and McDermott’s Castle and you could see their amazement at the scenery we sometimes take for granted. As they went through the Park, the chat among the participants was of the beauty, openness and the amount of activities Lough Key Forest Park has to offer. As a local, one could only feel proud.
Emergency personnel in our thoughts
The sound of sirens yesterday and the presence of the Aer Corps helicopter over the town (twice this week) indicated that something big had happened. Word filtered through that there had been a serious accident on the Sligo Road outside Ballinafad. This was confirmed by Gardaí on duty at Tawnytaskin, diverting cars via Corrigenroe and trucks through Ballymote. Later in the evening the full extent of the horrific accident became known with one man dead and another seriously injured. In circumstances like these we obviously think and pray for the deceased, his family, and the injured. But we should also spare a thought for those who attended the scene, the Fire Brigade personnel, ambulance and air crew and the Garda personnel along with members of the clergy. It must have been a traumatic day for those people, men and women who work day and night to help others and who must surely be affected by scenes like yesterday’s.
Reaction to new Boyle candidate
Such was the interest in Eddie Conroy adding his name as a candidate for the forthcoming general election (and published exclusively here on Boyletoday.com), that viewing figures for the website hit an all time daily high last Monday. And if the well wishers on facebook and elsewhere are a barometer of success, then Eddie should do well when the election does take place. Putting forward a candidate in Boyle will certainly get the main political parties to sit up and take a look at the town. As a member of the Right2Water group, Eddie will obviously campaign against water charges but other cuts to the town, including the Garda Station will no doubt figure in his manifesto as will the lack of any jobs announcement or employment assistance by this and previous Government’s for Boyle. In addition, there is a large number of young people in Boyle who feel disenfranchised at present. Chances are Eddie Conroy will get these votes, and if he does, it will make life very difficult for Fine Gael and Fianna Fail in this area. Interesting days lie ahead on the political scene around Boyle.
Pete Walsh Regatta on Saturday
Tomorrow evening will see boat lovers and friends of the late Pete Walsh gather on Lough Key to remember the affable operator of the Lough Key Boats. Pete was well known and respected by those in Boyle and indeed mnay from all over the world who met him on their visits to Lough Key. The boats will gather at the harbour at 5.30pm and sail to Castle Isalnd. The event will be followed by a Bar B Q. While he would have loved to been at an event such as this, no doubt Pete will be looking down an all incolved Saturday evening.
And finally…..!
Bert, at 85 years old, always wanted a pair of soft spike golf shoes, so seeing some on sale after his round, he bought them and he was so delighted with his purchase decided to wear them home to show his wife.
Walking proudly into the house, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Notice anything different about me?”
Margaret at age 83, looked him over and replied, “Nope.”
Frustrated as all get out, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the new golf shoes. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, “Notice anything different NOW???”
Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan response, “Bert, what’s different? It’s hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, and it’ll be hanging down again tomorrow.”
Furious, Bert yells out, “AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT’S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?”
“Nope. Not a clue”, she replied.
“IT’S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT’S LOOKING AT MY NEW GOLF SHOES!!!
Without missing a beat old Margaret replies, “And that Bert is why you shoulda bought a new golf hat.”
