Boyle natives in European Masters Athletics Championship
Strandhill resident John McDermott, who is originally from Abbeytown in Boyle will participate in the European Masters Athletic Championships in Touran in Poland this week.
John will participate in Over 80 years 400m today Tuesday at 3.30 (Irish time), the Pentathlon on Thursday starting at 12.52 and the 60m hurdles on Friday at 17.00.
John previoulsy won gold at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Finland in 2022. He also won gold in the Men’s 400m at the World Masters Championships in Poland in 2019 as well as having “a couple of silvers and bronzes” according to himself.
John’s family and friends in Boyle, Sligo and elsewhere will be keeping an eye on this week’s championships when the spritely athlete participates along with his other Irish team mates.
John’s brother Liam, along with his wife Alice, live in the family home in Abbeytown.
And a big congratulations also to Boyle athlete Michelle Lannon who claimed a bronze medal at the European Masters Athletics Championships on Tuesday, finishing fifth in the W50 category in the Women’s Cross-country race and helping Ireland to the bronze medal in the team category. It was a busy few days for Michelle as she also finished sixth in the indoor 3,000m on Sunday in a time of 11 minus 01.98 seconds.
Another local athlete Ann Wynne will participate in the 80m W55 category at the Championships.
Update Thursday 21st: Ann has also won bronze!
