Boyle soldier’s bravery remembered
Over 60 former soldiers and their families attended a ceremony on Saturday to remember those who fought in the siege of Jadotville in the Congo in 1961.
Among those remembered was Boyle man Sgt. George Tiernan from Termon Rd.
The late George was represented by his wife Mary and family.
Six Roscommon soldiers were involved in the siege.
The event was organised to formally recognise the bravery of the soldiers 55 years after they were attacked while on UN duty in the region.
Minister of State with responsibility for Defence Paul Keohoe presented a copy of the citations to each member or next of kin of the unit while wreaths were laid in memory of the deceased members of the company.
