176 assaults & offences in Carrick
Leitrim Joint Policing Committee have agreed to commence the process towards implementing a ban on street drinking in the town.
It follows claims that there have been a combined 176 assaults and public order offences in the Leitrim town this year so far.
According to a report on local radio station Shannonside FM, Superintendent Kevin English expressed serious concerns at the meeting about the number of assaults in the town, which had caused policing issues.
Superintendent Kevin English told the JPC meeting that as of August 21st, 47 assaults had been committed in the town this year, with 44 per cent of them related to the night-time economy.
During the same period, he said that 129 public order offences happened in the town and people were carrying far too much drink through its streets.
Shannnonside FM said the Superintendent claimed the only effective way of dealing with the issue was through introducing a bylaw that would make it illegal to drink outside premises in Carrick-on-Shannon.
A draft of the bylaw was presented to members, some of whom said that it would have a detrimental impact on the hen and stag party industry in the town.
A similar submission was received by Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce, who say that is not a significant enough problem that would require such bylaws to be introduced.
The report concluded that it was agreed to proceed with the process of implementing the ban and Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District will decide whether to introduce it at their meeting on December 5th.
